Synopsis

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) serves as the cornerstone of India’s agricultural research, education, and extension system, functioning as the apex national body for advancing agricultural growth and resilience. During 2025–26, ICAR recorded steady and tangible progress across key domains, including the development of impactful technologies, rollout of innovative programmes, strengthening of the agricultural education system, and firm adoption of the principle of “One Organization–One Purpose–One Narrative.” The year emerged as a landmark, with record production of foodgrains, horticultural crops, and milk, reflecting the collective strength of ICAR’s scientific, academic, and extension systems nationwide. A total of 367 agri-horti crop varieties and 152 production and protection technologies were developed. All major agriculture missions announced by the Government of India in the Union Budget 2025–26 are closely aligned with ICAR’s mandate. These include the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses to achieve self-reliance in tur, urad, and masoor through improved seeds, enhanced productivity, and better post-harvest management; the Mission for Cotton Productivity to boost yield and sustainability through climate-resilient varieties, mechanization, and improved agronomic practices; the National Mission on High-Yielding Seeds to strengthen R&D and commercialization of pest-resistant and climate-resilient varieties; the National Makhana Board to promote production, processing, value addition, and marketing of makhana; and the Second National Genebank for safety duplication of vital crop germplasm. Additionally, through focused initiatives in natural farming, the Clean Plant Programme, and nano-research, ICAR continues to advance science-led sustainability, productivity, and resilience in the Indian agricultural production system. In a transformative move, ICAR for the first time introduced comprehensive “Gender” and “Communications” policies while reinforcing its “Research Data Management” framework, advancing its commitment to inclusivity, transparency, and data-centric operations.
